SPEED ON THE CINDERS.
WESTERN SPRINGS RACING. PERFORMANCE OF A. MATTSON. ENGLISH RIDER DEFEATED. The victory of the Auckland and Dominion champion, A. Mattson, over one of the most noted English broadside™, J. Kempster, was a fitting conclusion to the cinder track race:? at the Western Springs Speedway on Wednesday evening.' The success of the local man came as a great surprise to the excited spectators, and his win against so famous a rider as Kempster has sefved to consolidate even more definitely than before Mattson's supremacy among Dominion broadsiders. The international match race in which Mattson defeated the English champion •was the lai.t event, and was ensily the most exciting of the evening. Kempster and Bond were to represent England against Mattson and Bray, of Auckland, but both of Bond's motors failed him, and Kempster had to ride without his teammate. The Englishman drew the inside place, with Ma;tson on the outside and Bray in the centre. The three men came past the stnrter together, and entered the first bend in a flurry of flying cindeis. Mattson's blue and white jersey could be Been to flash ahead of Kempster's white colours, while Bray was pushed out near the safety-fence and left many yard:? behind. Tlio two champions lifted their models "out of the corner almost together, but the next time round Mattson had increased his lead, and ho continued lo do bo during the whole race, finally winning by 30 yards. Kempster is said to bo one of the world's most famous exponents of white-lino ruling, but in this respect he met his master in the local man, who never left the inside of the track for an instant, giving the Englishman no chance of slipping past. Both men had slight trouble with their motors, but Mattson s Buperior cornering enabled him to defeat an overseas rider who had previously carried eveything before him on other New Zealand tracks.
The second Englishman, F. Bond, had little opportunity of displaying his skill, as his mounti! gave frequent trouble. The two Australians, J. Bishop and 0. Anderson, were well up to their usual form, and figured prominently in the principal evenjjp. B. Bray, who rode with marked success last season, tried a fresh mount on Wednesday, and his winning of the Christmas Handicap proved the wisdom of the change. He is likely to prov'e a serious rival to Mattson with his new machine. W. Herbert also met with success, and won the New Year Handicap in fine style. J. Garmson had a popular \Vin in the A grade match race, while J. Stewart, narrowly beat D. Mattson in the final of the B grade event. The track was in good order save for a bump on tne top bend, and the times were generally fast. A display of fireworks was given at the conclusion of the racing. Bray, on si borrowed Rurlge. was left behind at the start, Mattson taking the lead from Kenipster. The local champion was infinitely buperior to the famous English rider, especially on the corners, and won by 30 yards. Bray, who made a good recovery, was a close third, Time, lm 26b. AUCKLAND V. Anderson started from the inside, with Bray alongside him Mattson next, and the other Australian, Bishop, on thf» outside. Mattson took the lead, and was going well when Bishop almost collided with him. The Australian fell, and Mattson, thinking Kimpelf secure,'slowed down. .Anderson came up very fast, and just beat the local man for first place after some clever broadsuhng. Time, lm 255. ENGLAND V. AUSTRALIA. J. Bishop, Australia (Rudge), 1; J. Kempster, England (Rudge), 2 . Anderson, of Australia, drew the inside position, but Bond, one of the Englishmen, took the lead at the first bend. He kept ahead for two lap 3. but fell, and Bishop took hin place. Kempster could not overtake the other Australian, and finished a close second, while C. Anderson, of Australia, was third. It was a thrilling race. Time, l.m 23 2-ss. A GRADE MATCH RACE. J. Garmson (Norton), 1; A. Way (Norton), 5. The early stages of the race were very exciting the four riders cornering together In fine style. There were four false starts before the race commenced, and two of the' competitors ran out of petrol in tne ] a3 t la;p. Garmson rode particularly well and deserved his win. Time, lm 26 3-ss.
