AUCKLAND CENTRE TOURNEY PLAY IN CLOSING STAGES. WHITTLE AND CLARKE IN FINAL.
Tho annual full rink Christmas tourney conducted by tho Auckland Bowling Centre reached tho closing stages at tho Auckland preen yesterday. Tho inter-section play resulted in H. C. Clarke (Carlton), with two lives, and IP. Whittle (Grey Lynn), with one life, being left to contest tho final. In tho inter section play on Wednesday Clarko had been successful against Whittle, but when they met again yesterday afternoon better team play on the. part of tho Grey Lynn rink and some brilliant work by Whittlo saw tho Carlton team defeated on tho final head by a margin of threo points. It was a most exciting canio. with tho two teams taking tho lead in turn, utid tho standard of bowls was very high. Man for man, tho Grey Lynn team was mperior to Carlton "and fully deserved its win. Baildon's leading was excellent and Jjivorsidgo also played well, while Whittle was always ready to press homo his advantages. J Tho Carlton team was no; nearly Fo consistent and Clarko was frequently left to savo tho position lone-handed. As tho Carlton team still has ono life, tho two rinks will meet for tho third time in the final match, which will commence at tho Auckland green nt 10 o'clock this morning. Following aro tho results:— Fourth Bound.—Bates, Bird. Kilgour, Clarko (Carlton), 23, v. Roulston, Bisli, Keith, Armstrong (Pukekohe), 12; Clarkson, Cotilts, Truscott. Ball (Carlton), 26, v. In the sixth and last round, played on Wednesday, interest was centred in the meeting of the remaining two-lifers, Clarke and "Whittle, and the other game between the remaining one-lifers, Armstrong and Turner. // Low scoring was seen in the opening rtages oi the game between Clarke and Whiltlt>, the score on tho fifth head being 5—2 in Carltcn's favour. On the sixth head Liversidge held two good shots but Clarke drew iv toucher and Whittle's drive gave nnother to Carlton, taking the score to 7—2. Mincham held shot on the next head but Bates got a handy second, only to be beaten by Mincham's second bowl. Clarke retrieved in Sne style with a toucher and made it two. Ho added another with his last and got 3 out of the head. The eighth head saw Grey a muchneeded four, mnking 'the score 10—6. in j chain was well ensconced on the next head until Kilgour shook tho head a little and lay 3 up. Ho followed with a toucher. Bird held shot on the 11th head and Liversidgo's two drives went astray, whittle failed to draw 'and Carlton obtained two, making the score 15— At this stage Grey Lynn was in an awkward position, but three three* quickly put the team, one up on the 14th head. On the 15th head Grey Lynn increased tho scoro by one and was then two up. . On the next head Clarko drew a bea il tu» shot, when Grey Lynn was lying well, reducing Whittle's lead to one The scoring was now very low and singles were thei order. On tho ISth head Grey Lynn, by the aid of a single, made tho scorn 19—16 in its favour. The 19th head, however, proved disastrous for Grey Lynn, which was four down when tho iskips changed over Whittle played practically the only two bad bowls of the match and Carlton scored a Bix. making the score 22—19. Carlton scored singles on the last two heads and the; game ended in Carlton s favour by 21 to 19. The game was good to watch and the worn of both skips at times was particularly good. Clarke shone out' well in tho early stages and again at the end, while Whittle put in rame felling work in the middle stages, ihei Grey Lynn skip was very hard put.to it at times, but he generally saved the situation. There was not much between the lends and the number two's were fairly even. Kilgour n work was steadier than Liversidge s. The spectators were treated to a fine exhibition of bowling on a green which was fairly keen pnd took some gauging to strike the length. Armstrong put Turner out of act.on. ile held the lead all tho way and was 19 to G on the 14th head. In tho seventh round Whittle met Armstrong, while Clarke had a bye. Whittle hud no difficulty in beating the Pukekoho plaver by 22 to 11, the game ending on the inth held. Whittle, with one life, thus earned the right to again meet Clarke, whose two lives were still intact. Tho game played yesterday a. f ternoon was full of interest, ' and it was only on the final head that Whittle managed to turn the tables on tho Carlton, team Clarke (scored two on the first lieac., but then the pin v of the Grey Lynn rmn became steadier. Whittle leading by sir to three on the fourth head. Whittle was lying three Then Whittle was lying four when Clarke drcw tho shot. The Grey Lynn skip tried to run him out but on a close measure Clarko scored one. Carlton s lead was J..creased by another single on tho n.nth head. Then Grey Lynn commonest! to proved form, and good . all-round pi. y. coupled with Rome brilliant bowls by Whittle, saw the team gradually overhaul Carlton's lead. Grey Lynn scored w tho 10th head and singles oil tho next two. On the 13th Whittle drew two shots and scored three, making tho scc-res leve .
