RACING CARNIVAL.

•ELLEBSIIE DERBY DAY.

KARAPOTI BEATS CYLINDER / MORE RECORDS BROKEN. ; i " HANDICAP TO GAY CREST. LADY QTJEX'S NEWMARKET. Two course records -were broken and one race record ivas equalled in keen and ruoctacular racing on the third day of t.nj Ellerslio summer carnival yesterday. This showed that the track, which has b'jen very fast throughout tho meeting, •was little if at all affected by the showers of rain that fell in the morning. Karapoti's victory over Cylinder and Gustavo in the Great Northern Derby, run in 2.32 3-5, equalling Desert Gold's record in 1916, was a feature of the day. Lady Quex won tho Newmarket Handicap, six furlongs, in the record time of 1.12 2-5, and Tenakoe the Glasgow Handicap, seven furlongs, in 1.25, also a record. By scoring a decisive win in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap Gay Crest atoned for his disappointment in the 'Auckland Cup, in which he finished first bet was placed second for interference. The attendance was estimated at 20,000. , Totalisator returns showed a marked recovery. The machine handled £70,930, compared with £74,182 10s on New Year s Day last year, a decrease of £3252 10s. This was regarded as distinctly satisfactory, the decrease on the first day having been £22,329 10s, and on the second day, £15,558. The investments for tho three days so far total £226,534 10s, compared .with £267,674 10s, a decrease of £41,140. Results:— ELLERSLIE HANDICAP, Of £400; apprentice riders: 1 mile. 4—LOVING' CUP. M. Dr. M. G. Louisson suffered ft stroke of ill-luck when Gay Crest lost the stake after being first fast the post in the Auckland Cup, but yesterday ho was compensated for that misfortune when Gay Crest scored a very convincing victory in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. Gay Crest's success was well anticipated, and he was the fax'ourite in a good betting race, in which Corinax and In the Shade were also well fancied. Star Stranger and Corinnx were first to show out from a perfect start, Corinax and Gay Crest leading past the stands from Goshawk. My Own. Concentrate, In the Shade, Standfast and Star Stranger. The pace at this stage was slow, and Gay Crest drew out slightly as they went up to the mile post. Just near the seven furlongs post Standfast went up to Gay Crest, and they were out five* lengths from Corinax, who was three lengths; clear of My Own. with In the Shade. Goshawk, Nassock. Concentrate and Count Palatine following. With four furlongs to go Gay Crest and Standfast were etill together in the lead, four lengths clear of Corinnx. who was followed by In the Shade, My Own, Nassock. Count Palatine, Goshawk, Motere and Concentrate. Gay Crest and Standfast showed the way into tho straight to Corinax. Count Palatine. Ms Own and Nassock. Nothing had a chance with Gay Crest in the run home and he scored by two lengths from Corinax, who defeated My Own by two and a-half lengths. Count Palatine was fourth, and then came Goshawk, Star Stranger, Motere. Concentrate. Spearmiss and Standfast. The winner was well ridden by T. Webster, who allowed him to stride along and gain a nice advantage while the pace was siow and other riders were restraining their mounts. ■ Once he settled down in the lead Gav Crest never looked like being beaten, and ho was going away again at tho finish. Corinax was always handily placed and made a ?ood effort, without being able to mako any impression on Gay Crest in the straight. My Own and Count Palatino ran solid races, and Standfast was well in the picturo until the Inst furlong. None of the others gave tiny trouble. LADY QI'EX'S SPRINT. ANOTHER COURSE RECORD. GOOD EFFORT BY BAYACRE. A fresh Ellerslio course, record of lm 12 2-5s for si:i furlongs was established by Lady Quex when she narrowly defeated Bnyacre in tho Newmarket Handicap. Speculation on the race was brisk and Lady Quex wa3 a better fency than Bayacre. The inside horses, Lady Quex and Chromadyne, received the best of the start, Chromadyne going on in the lead to be joined in a. furlong by Bayacre. Chromadyne and Bayacre carried on the running through tho cutting and into the straight from Lady Quex, Great Star, Gold Money and Courtesy. Once in line for home Lady Quex challenged and got home by a. neck from Bayacre, who defeated Gold Money by a length. Great Star was fourth, with Courtesy. White Wings and Sir Kay next. Lady Quex'a performance was a good one with 9.4. although Bayacre would have given her more trouble if ho had drawn a better post position. Bayacre carried 21b. overweight and, after showing brilliancy in the first couple of furlongs, hung on very well at the finish. Gold Money came from a good way back and Great Star ran his usual hobest race without being really dangerous.

SURPRISE IN COUNTY.

TETRARCHATE'S DIVIDEND.

An outsider. Tetrarcliate, effected a surprise in the County Handicap, for which Perennia, Havaspot and Pakitere were best supported. Tttrarchate paid a double-fisuro dividend, the only one of the day. Biilliant Lady and Havaspot were first to move, but Tetrarchate soon ran to the froDt from Brilliant Lady. Pakitere. Loving Cup, Awamutu and Carl Idem. Tetrarchate showed the way through the cutting to Awamutu. Loving Cup, Brilliant Ln.dy, Operatic and Rafllight. nnd there was little change until they reached the turn, where Loving Cup ran up second. In an exciting finish Tetrarchate stayed on to beat Loving Cup by a neck. Rafflight being another neck away third. Mauraer.a was fourth, followed by Gay Idea, Money Mint and Havaspot. Tetrarchate rim a good race on the first day when ho was slightly unlucky, but on this occasion he had the best of the running in front, nnd just saw it out in a hot finish with Loving Cup, who confirmed the improved form he revealed in winning the first race of the day. Rafflight was not too well placed early and should get a stake, while others likely to improve are Gay Idea, Mauriaena. and Leasehold. Havaspot was steadied by his weight and Pcrenms was never sighted.

Rekaraurau was troublesome at the post and was standing behind tho field *hen they were let go.

TiOYAL BABY WINS WELL

brilliant burst of speed.

Making her first appearance at the meet,n„ R o yal Baby registered a smooth performance in winning the Midsummer Handicap for which Aspian wns a good favourilo over the Chief Jewel-Columba bracket and Royal Baby. Columba was quickest to begin, but Royal Baby foon ran to the front from Oratorian. Chief Jewel. Columba High Comedy nnd Princess Bede. Royal Baby was still in charge entering the straight from Oratorian, High Comedy and Princess Bede with Chief Jewel coming through on tho fence. Royal Baby held her own in the run home to score by a length and a-half from Princess Bede. who defeated Chiof j ewe l by half a length. Oratorian was fourth, succeeded by Chief Cook, Aspian and High Comedy. „ , . , , The winner displayed a fine burst of speed to run to the front from the extreme outside in the first furlong, and ctayed on well at tho finish. Princess Bedo and Chief Jewel both battled on. gamely at the finish. Oratorian showed good speed after being slow to move, and his turn should come noon now. Afpian was slow away and waa never iri the picture. Drama went very lame in the race and wiu pulled up in the straight.
