SECOND DAY'S EVENTS.

HANDICAPS FOR TO-MORROW.

THE CHAMPION CONTEST. PROMISE OF GOOD FIELD. The following handicaps for the second day of the trotting meoting to-morrow have been declared by Mr. G. Paul:—

■The remaining event on the programme is the Great Northern Trotting Derby. Acceptances close at 12 o'clock to-day. NEW ZEALANDERS IN VICTORIA. POLYXENA AND ATTALAD. [from our own correspondent.] MELBOURNE, Dec. 18. At present most gocd horses are in retirement until the autumn racing carnival in Melbourne and Sydney, and there were a poor lot of acceptors for the charity meeting conducted by the Victoria Amateur Turf Club at Caulfield on December 16, Interest was taken in the appearance of the ex-Aucklander Polyxena, a starter in the Packer Plate, run over six furlongs. Polyxena is a four-year-old mare by Chief Ruler from Podokes and is trained by H. R. Telford for " Mr. F. Smitliden," of Sydney, who has placed a large teßm under the care of Phar Lap's lessee-trainer. At his previous start Polyxena had run eighth in a poor field in a sprint race at a country meeting at Woodend The mare beat only a couple home in the Packer Plate, but she looks like one who needs plenty of racing, and in the capable hands of Telford she may eventually pay her way. Attalad, a gelding by Gay Lad from Matata, arrived in Melbourne from New Zealand some months ago. He did. very little racing in the Dominion, nnd after a spell has just been put to work at Flemington. Judging by appearances Attalad may do well as a hurdler.
