The December Handicap was a pretty rnce and gave rise to an exciting finish. Speculation on the event was spirited, and no fewer than six of the runners were heavily backed, Benefice, First Flight and Rawhitiroa being the favourites. First Flight was a trifle slow to strike a gait. Baron Bingen beginning best. Once the field had settler! down Baron Bingen and Some Dillon wero racing together in the lead, with Rawhitiroa and Little Guy together next, ahead of First Flight and Benefice Thin order was maintained for a mile, when Some Dillon broke and then First Fligh' followed suit as Benefico went up fast on the outside, while Great Ballin struck trouble and lost his driver. Baron Bingen and Benefice were the loaders into the straight, from Rawhitiroa and Little Guy. In a tood raco home Benefice stayed on to beat Rawhitiroa by a neck. Baron Bingen was a head away third, and 1 First Flight was fourth, next coming Little Guy and Some Dillon It was » solidly run lace, in which the winner went 7 4-5 seconds better than her handicap Rawhitiroi. might have just won if he hnrj go out from the rails a triHe sooner.
