NOTES ON THE EVENTS.

GOOD DAY FOR FAVOURITES.

EASY WIN FOR ARROW LAD.

NEA LAP SHOWS IMPROVEMENT. [llY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Wednesday. The Woodvillo Meeting concluded to-day in fine cool weather and on n. fast track. Favourites had a good innings, winning the firnt five races. Arrow Lad scored easily in lht> principal handicap, while Hunting Cry mn.de an interesting reappearance in New Zealand to win the open Bprint comfortably. Easterly started a red hot favourite for tho' hurdleß and was in a winning position all the way, being never further back than second or third. When she ran out at the last fence, however, and lost several lengths on Evening Hero, it looked as if she had lost the raco, but sho canio again and scored by a neok. Kaokaoroa was three lengths away third, having been well up throughout. The winner's performance was impressive for sho practically threw tho race away ot thci last fence. Her opponents, however, were a poor lot. Kaokaoroa ran an improved race. The Maiden Bace. Beverage, an evon money favourite for the maidon raco, duly won, but he was fortunate in obtaining a run up on tho rails on the straight, where four, horses were in front of him But for this it in probable that ho would not have been in the money. Blacksmith made the pace and being joined by Chief Savage, the pair led to the straight from Kalrnuk, Elulo snd Beverage. Brambletorn csmo up on tho oulcr coming into lino and had taken charge half-way up tho running. Here Beverage slipped through and went on to bent Brambletorn by a length. Beverage was lucky and had Brambletorn been handled better he would have won and brought off a big surprise. Ho is a useful looking four-year-old, bred at Stonyhurst, being by The Ace from BTamblotye, ancl in thus a half-brother to Thorndale and Prickles. Arrow Lad scored a very comfortable win in tho principal handioap, taking the lead six furlongs from home and never afterwards giving anything a chance. Paratoo led him to the eii and then lay second, followed by Otoiri, Atholspear, High Falutin' and While Fang. Arrow Lad was well clear entering the straight and eventually won by throe lengths from High Falutin', who beat Paratoo by a length, Atholspear was a close fourth, and then came Mountain Heath, Otoiri and White Fang. Nothing had any chance with Arrow Liad who broke his exasperating sequence of seconds. High Falutin' was all out to beat Paratoo, who claimed a 61b. allowance, but did not improve very much on hig first day's form. Atholspear was not good enough and the efforts of Otairi and While Fang. wh(in they moved Up on tho turn, were short-lived. Arrow Lad. White Fang and High Falutin' were very evenly backed at tho head of the pool. A Thrilling Finish. The two-year-old race provided a thrilling finish. Esteem getting up on the post to beat the pacemakers. Chief Cook and Hampden, with just sufficient margin to deolare by. St. Roger got left and took no part in tho running, Chief Cook and Hampden leading to the straight. They were having a raro battle and until the closing stages Hampden looked likely. Chief Cook finished hotter, however, only to go under in the very last stride to the hard-ridden favourite, Esteem, the margins being half a head and a head. All 1/umbug was fou:rth.

The winner's performance was very solid, for Gray was hard at him a long way from home. Chief COok and Hampden ran well, while All Humbug and Psychologist, the latter from the same stable as the winner, performed creditably.

Hunting Cry having his first race since his success over a mile and a-quarter at Randwick, started a hot favourite for the sprint. After beginning beet and lying second to Taranto to tho straight ho came on to score a very comfortable victory. There was a good race for second money, a length and a-half behind the winner. Royal Parade boating Keddar by half a neck. Dobbin was fourth, after being prominent throughout.

Hunting Cry's Reappearance. Reed was never called up to move on the winner, just keeping him .going. It was a good performance, although neither the opposition nor the time was so good as whßn Toxeuma won yesterday. The consistent Aomil scored a convincing win in tho hack sprint, after getting none the best of a poor despatoh and then running wide into the straight. There was one false Start and when let go Mahora got all the best of it, being well clear in the first two furlongs from Money Mint, San Quex, Crash and Pakitere. San Quex got squeezed back at the half and on the turn the order was Mahora, Crash and Pakitere. Once in line Statuary drew up and was clear over tho last furlong, Acmil then came with a rattle and got up to win by half a neck. Pass On was a length and a-half away third. The winner won too well for any excuses for the others, but tho favourite Pakitere was outside several horses all the, way and better ridden would havo done better. Arajean got lost at tho start and never had any chance.

Nea Lap's Good Effort. Tho feature of the hack distance event was the forward showing of Phar Lap's sister, Nea Lap, for she has shown very moderate form, but to-day she was up on the outer on the turn and beat all but the winner, Pewa. Pewa wos always well placed in behind the leaders, Arrowzone and Tripping, and once bo made hi 3 run tho race was over, his margin at the post being a length and a-half. The favourite Tripping failed by a head to withstand Nea Lap's run and Jayson was right up fourth. Jayson was unlucky, for he had to como from the rear of the field. Nea Lap carried only ] £l4, so her dividend for second was substantial and tho largest of tho meeting. I An inquiry into Lordlike's running wqb I held, but no action was taken. Kahikatoa. won his double in convincing stylo, again being handy to the leaders, Queen's Choice and Tahoma, to the straight and then running home too strongly for his opponents, beating Tahoma by a length and a-half. Tahoma lasted long enough to beat DcHert Son,? by a head. It was again a good thing for tho winner. Tahoma should soon win a raco and Desert Song ran woll. Head Serang was unlucky. AUTO PAY'S FUTURE. GOOD FORM IN VICTORIA. [FROM OUR, OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MELBOURNE, Doc. 4. Most of the progeny of Tea Tray havo been moroly sprinters, but Melbourne racing men are wondering whether Auto Pay will prove an excoption. This two-year-old oolt is out of tho Bezonian maro La I'uix (dam of Pay Paix and Pound Note, both of whom aro winners) and most students of breeding will arrive at tho conclusion that a colt by a son of Tho 'Petrarch out of a Bezonian mare is destined for ft sprinting career. However, the manner in which Auto Pay won both his last two races suggests stamina. When he scored at Epsom Auto Pay camo from a long way back and in his subsequent success at Sundown Park ho showed grit and determination in overcoming Jacomalt at the finish. Auto Pay started the season very modestly, but ho appears to have come good nnd a classic race in tho autumn may not be beyond him. However, for the time being he is to spell. This decision is n wise one as many youngsters havo been ruined through being overnicod in tho early part of their careers Auto Pay, who was bred at Ellerslie by Mr. Inn Duncan, brought only MOgns. when offered in the sale ring in Melbourne. Ho has already won more than double that amount in stakes.
