SELECTION OF TEAMS.

PLAYERS RETAINING PLACES. EXPERIENCE AT CLAUDELANDS. [ill" TEI/Etill.U'tl. —OWN ( OIUtESI'OXDEN'T.] 1 HAMILTON, Wednesday. The nrgumeuts put forward by 'Jack O'Ureen 111 the bowling article appearing 111 tin- on Saturday in favour of players' positions being adhered to. find support in the experience of the Claudelands Bowling Club. Last season a competition for four buttons embossed with ferns, which were presented by Mr. John Matthews, a foundation member of the club, was inaugurated. The ferns changed hands several times during the early part ot the season and then they were won by a. rink skipped by G. Clevely. For nearly a dozen successive Saturdays the team withstood nil challenges. Every man in the team knew his position and the skip's requirements, and they played splendid bowls. Finully the team went down to a rink skipped by J. Paterson, who, as far ns the current season is concerned, has retained possession for several weeks and promises to hold on to the trophies for an extended period. In striking contrast to this method of play was the experience of four skips drawn from the Claudelands Club for tho champion of champions competition for tho Howden Shield. Playing against a judiciously selected team from another club the rink did not survive the first, game, and the score indicated that, although good players individually, tho members did not " nick " us a team It is safe to say that the holders of the Matthews Ferns, selected on account of their positions, would havo done far better. All the players in the Claudelands Club are classified, and they retain their classifications throughout the season, an arrangement which has been found to operate advantageously in inter-club matches. GLEN EDEN TOURNEY.
