THE PRESIDENT RESIGNS.
SCHOOL ESSAY COMPETITIONS. The executive of tho Auckland Zoological Society at its meeting yesterday accepted with regret tho resignation of Professor J. C. Sperrin-Jolmson from the position of president, which ho has occupied sinco tho society was formed two years ago.
The Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. Baildon, expressed hearty appreciation of Professor Sperrin-Johnson's services to tho society, and of tho enthusiasm ho had shown in promoting its objects. Professor Sperrin-Johnson, in reply, said ho had enjoyed his association with tho members, and regretted that owing to his denarturo from Auckland ho was compelled to resign. Mr. 11. E. Vaile, a vice-president, was appointed acting-president until tho next annual meeting. It was decided to hold essay competitions, open to pupils of secondary and primary schools in tho Auckland education district, tho subject of essays to bo " Impressions of a Visit to the Auckland Zoological Park." Monetary prizes were promised by Professor Sperrin-Johnson and Mr. Vaile. It was agreed that essays should bo limited to 500' words each, and that tho closing date for entries should be March 31 next.
