CARE OF TRAM TRACKS.
CONCENTRATION OF DEPOTS. NEW SITE AT NEWMARKET. Tho concentration of all the permanent way activities of tho Auckland Transport Board at one depot, which is to be established at Newmarket, was agreed to by the board yesterday. The proposals involve the removal of the paving mixing depot from Gillies Avenue and tho permanent way depot from Eden Terrace, the total estimated cost being £9730. Tho site to be acquired is in tho Newmarket industrial area and is bounded by Gillies Avenue, Morrow Street and Mortimer Pass. It is owned by the Buckland Estate. Tho board's manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, reported that full uso could be mado of tho existing plant, and plant to be purchased, including a metal drier and screens and tho estimated cost of providing and fixing it, would cost £4090. "The cost of the land was £ISOO. Efforts had been made to secure land next to the Eden Terrace permanent way depot to permit necessary enlargement, but the owners asked too high a price. The manager, therefore, recommended that an additional area of land adjacent to the proposed mixing depot should bo procured and the Eden Terrace depot transferred. The estimated cost, including £2400 for buildings and £ISOO for land, was £4140. The present Eden Terrace site, which cost £6OO in 1921, would bo sold and tho sum realised could bo used in part-payment of the cost of removal. The reports of tho manager and the recommendation of tho properties' committee that the land should be purchased and that tho committee should bo authorised to make arrangements for the purchase of plant were adopted.
