INDUSTRIAL AREA.

SCHEME FOR MANUKAU.

A REGIONAL COMMITTEE. DECISION OF CONFERENCE. "I have received only one invitation to address or confer with a chamber of commerce in New Zealand, and the proposal put forward by the Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce for the establishment of a special industrial area, in the Auckland region is the first constructive suggestion on any matter relating to the physical development of a town which has come under my notice." This statement was made by Mr. J. W. Mawson, Director of Town Planning, in an address to a conference of local bodies at Onehunga last evening. The Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. E. Morton, presided, and explained the steps already taken concerning an industrial area.

Mr. Mawson explained in detail the scheme of regional planning, and' urged that New Zealand should follow the examples of England and the United States, so that loss should nof. be caused by having to rectify mistakes at, great expense. There was no suggestion of interference by the Town Planning Board with the powers and privileges of local bodies, but the board invited their co-operation.

Mr. T. Bloodworth asked when regional planning could proceed. Mr. Mawson gave the assurance that the Town Planning Board would be glad to give effect to the wishes of the local bodies as soon as they decided to co-operate. Mr. E. V. Blake urged that a regional committee should be set up first.

Mr. J. E. Green said that since the conference in October all the local bodies concerned had approved of an industrial area being formed. Twenty-four industries were already established. He moved: "That this meeting recommends to the local bodies concerned that a regional committee be set up without delay under the Town Planning Act, and that a recommendation be made to the "regional committee to take into consideration the question of establishing an industrial zone on the Manukau."

The motion was carried unanimously.
