INCOME TAX LEVY.
VISITORS TO AUSTRALIA.
" Not only is the chargo in many cases an imposition, but in some it amounts to nothing more or less than confiscation," said a traveller who returned from Australia yesterday by tho Ulimaroa concerning the incomo tax levy made on visitors to tho Commonwealth. "I was over there for only a few days attending a conference and I did not make a penny out of it, ' he said. "When I was coming away, I had t0..-flake a tax declaration, and when 1 advised the official that I had not made any money, he told me to make tho minimum return, which cost me 10s. My lawyer advised mo to fight the case, but that would have caused me to postpone my departure and put me to considerable expense. The Government knows that it is- cheaper to pay than to fight, and, therefore, has no hesitation to making the levy." Another case reported yesterday was that of a girl who had spent 10 days' holiday in "Sydney. Sho had spent money and earned none but, she also had to pay the minimum tax.
