"WILL NOT WORK."
MAN WITH LARGE FAMILY. BREACH OF PROBATION. "He will not work; that is the trouble," said Mr. W. J. Campbell, probation olficer, in tho Police Court yesterday, when Gordon Stewart Mason, aged 40, labourer (Mr. Bryce Hart), was charged with failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation. A plea of guilty was entered. Mr. Campbell said accused was convicted of theft in October, 1928, and was placed on probation for 12 months, and ordered to make £25 6s restitution. He had not paid the money, however, and had also failed to report. In January last he was brought before the Court, and his term of probation was extended for 12 months. Accused was no use on probation, and ho and his family lived on charitable aid.
Ac •cording to counsel accused had eight children, all under the age of 13 years, and had been doing casual work. Two years ago he obtained a gramophone on the hire-purchase system *jiid pawned it. a charge of theft following.
"If Your Worship will remand him for a week he can be dealt with on the original charge," suggested Mr. Campbell. "He will not work and 1 want to clean his name off my books."
Tho magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt, granted the, remand.
