LAKE WAIKAREMOANA.
CONTROLLING THE OUTFLOW. PROBLEM FOR ENGINEERS. v [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE. Wednesday. Government surveyors aro investigating in detail the nature of the rock formation at Waikaromoaria, in view of the forthcoming visit to the hydro-electric works of Professor P. G. Hornell. One problem is, that of confining the outflow of water to the desired outlets. The lake lies 2000 ft. high, and there are many places in the rocky basin through which the water escapes. It has indeed been suggested that there is somo_ frac- ; t: ture in the ground through which it flows. ' . . Where the difficulty has arisen is that ~i[, water from the Waikaretaheke River is >, i not sufficient to supply more than two or the three turbinos included m t a initial scheme. At the. same t,nl ? 1 .. is an abundant supply of water lake if only it can be tapped- noW Methods of achieving tb'sbeing investigated.
