CHARGE OF MURDER.
NEW PLYMOUTH TRAGEDY. ACCUSED AGAIN REMANDED. CROWD THRONGS COURTROOM. [|iV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. JVcdnesday. Great public interest was shown in the appearaueo on remand to-day of Alexander Townsend, who is charged with tho murder of his wife, Cora Alice Townsend, at Fitzroy on September 16. Long before the time for tho sitting of tho Court people took tip positions round tho courthouse. and the appearance of the car bringing accused from the gaol was tho signal for a rush to tho sido door, where accused was hurried into tho building. The crowd then rushed to tho front of the building and tho courtroom was soon crowded.
The police applied for a remand until next Wednesday. Mr. L. M. Moss, counsel for accused, said hp understood that tho hearing of tho charge could bo taken on October 7. Ho would agreo to a remand until that date. This was accepted by the polico and tho remand was mado accordingly to that date, when tho hearing of tho charge and tho inquest will be taken simultaneously.
