VACANT BISHOPRIC.
SEE OF NEWCASTLE. SUCCESSOR TO LATE DR. LONG. (Received September lfi. 8.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. Sept. 18. Dr. Neville Stuart Talbot, Bishop of Pretoria, has been offered the position of Bishop of Newcastle, in succession to the late Dr. G. M. Long. Archdeacon W. A. Charlton, of Sydney, commenting ori the selection of Dr. Talbot, said new blood would bo welcomed as tlio Church in Australia had got into a rut from which an outstanding personality like that of Dr. Talbot should help materially to lift it. The archdeacon said Dr. Talbot did fine work as a chaplain at the front in the Great War. He was a well-known writer on ecclesiastical subjects and his family was associated with Talbot House, tho headquarters of Toe H. Dr. Talbot has been Bishop of Pretoria since 1920. He was at Haileybury and Oxford, arid was ordained in 1903. Ho was u Fellow and Tutor of Bnlliol College, 1909-14, and then sorved as chaplain in France. Before taking orders ho had served for four years in the Rifle Brigade. Ho wrote " Religion at the Front," 1917, and " Religion Behind tho Front." His father is Dr. E. S. Talbot, formerly Bishop of Winchester.
