CHAMBER OF COMMERCE* The Onehunga-Manukau Chamber o? Commerce met on Wednesday evening* the president, Mr. J. E. Green, presiding* Twenty-eight new members elected. The president reported the progress made in having the Manukau foreshore proclaimed an industrial area. He had consulted a number of the larger land' owners, and found them sympathetic toward the project, but he had ascer* tained that the matter did not lie the landowners, but with the local bodiei controlling the area. lie had therefor* communicated with the Onchung 3 ' Borough Council and the One Tree Hi" Borough Council, and it would cr advisable to set up a regional planning committee. Mr. S. J. E. Closey, president of th< Papatoetoe Welfare League, gave an address on the proposal to provide a mor® direct route between Onehunga and th# Great South Road, via Mangere. Th® proposal was referred to, the executive committee to investigate It was decided to ask the Telegrap Department to include Onehunga in t ® area served with telegrams' at the bas® rate. The president reported that he had J l #* ceived complaints that some people wer® causing inconvenience to the public using the street telephones far beyond t >® time limit.
