SUBSIDY. FOR ROAt) WORK. RATES ON UNOCCUPIED HOUSES. Advice that Cabinet had approved of a subsidy of £215 for metalling and sealing the intersection of Kitchener and Shakespeare Roads, Takapuna, was received from Mr. A. Harris,' M.P., at a meeting of tho Takapuna Borough Council on Wednesday evening. It was docided to thank Mr. Harris for his assistance in securing the approval of the subsidy. Three applications were received from residents for remission of half rates for last year on account of the properties being unoccupied. Consideration of tho applications was deferred. In a fourth caso a resident forwarded a cheque for half tho rates charged on an unoccupied house. Tho council decided to return tho cheque and demand full payment of the rates. Tho Auckland Harbour Board was granted tho use of a site for tho erection of a control station for the Rangitoto Beacon light for a period of 10 years at a peppercorn rental. 1 lie council reserved tho right to review the position at (he end of 10 years. Tho St. John Ambulance Association was granted permission to hold a street collection in tho borough on October 3.
