COURAGEOUS SCORES.

WINNER'S GOOD FINISH. MENDIP OUTSTAYED AT END. HYNANNA RUNS UNPLACED. [BY TKIiEGRAriI. —SPECIAL RErOUTEU.] WANGANUI, Saturday. Backers wero well on tho spot when thoy singled out Mentlip and the IlynannaCourageous bracket for most attention in tho Higgio Handicap, Courageous finishing splendidly to win convincingly from Mendip. A good Blurt saw Mendip. Marjoram, Royal Gamo and Duellona race past the stands abreast, with Tourist running up fust on tho outsido. Running into tho back stretch Tourist assumed command two lengths clear of Royal Game, who was closely followed by Marjoram,. Mendip, Hynanna, My Own and Duellona. There wus little change in tho leading positions at tho half-mile, where Courageous could bo seen making a forward move on tho outside. Nearing tho turn Royal Game began to go back and when thoy rounded the bend Tourist, Marjoram. Mendip and Courageous were racing in close order in the lead. Once heads were turned for homo Mendip drew out slightly, but ho failed to withstand a strong challonge from Courageous, who came on to win by a length. Marjoram was two and a-half lengths back third and Yorna fourth. Next to finish were Hynanna, Ruanui, My Own and Tourist.

Courageous has never looked nor galloped better than ho did in this race and in his present form ho may win another good handicap shortly. Mr. Kemball's other representative, Ilynanna. who carried several pounds overweight to secure the services of H. Gray, was expected to show improvement on previous efforts this season. but he failed to realise expectations, although ho was well tip to tho turn and eventually finished fifth. Hynanna is not yet back to form and may need a little more racing. Mendip ran another eolid race and just failed in the last 50yds. THEEE-YEAE-OLDS IN FORM. ARISUS ON THE IMPROVE. Three-year-olds were well to the fore in the Trial Handicap, filling the first four positions. Imamint was the favourite, but tho best she could do was finish fourth, tho dividends being returned by two other solidly-backed horses in Arisus and Vandyke. Imamint and Arisus were first to show out, Ari.sii3 leading along the back from Ganpat, Imamint. Vandyke and Laconic. Running across tho top .layson went up fast, otherwise thero was little change, the order into the sttaight being Arisus. Ganpat, Jayson. Imamint and Vandyko. Arisus stayed on well in tlic run home to win by half a length, from Vandyko. Paratoo, finishing on, was two lengths back third, and Imamint fourth. came Acuiil, Laconic. and Jayson.

Arisus is on the improve and his win proved tliat his second in tho Wanganui Guineas was better form than that of Vandyke nnd Imamint in decisively beating novice fields recently Several of the runners were unlucky and anions these were Paratoo and Prince Desmond. Paratoo lost a forward position on the rails after going a furlong, otherwise bo would have gono very close to winning. His finishing effort was encouraging, and it will bo surprising if he fails to win very soon. Imamint was always handily placed, but failed to produce the dash expected at tho finish. THE TWO-YEAR-OLD EVENT. KOROKIO OUTS PEE DS FIELD. On the strength of brilliant track work Korokio was backed down to oddym for the Debutante Slakes, and sho justified the support by winning nicely from King Colossus, who was third in demand at a nice

price Chief Clerk and King Colossus moved first from the inside positions, but Korokio soon ran to the front to lead into tho straight from King Colossus. Sailing. Ecila, and Chief Clerk. Just after rounding the bend Korokio swung out a trifle, but Gray soon straightened her up and she went on to win by a length from King Colossus. Another length away was La Poupee, and four lengths further back came Curie in fourth position. Then followed Chief Clerk, Ecila. Hampden and Cape Gold.

The winner has a very racy appearance and showed fine speed to run to the lead from No. 12 at the barrier. She is a fullsister to Fernden. and was purchased at the yearling sales in Sydney last Easter for 70 guineas. King Colossus, who should be susceptible to improvement, was always in tho picture, but did not havo enough speed to pace it with Korokio. La Poupee finished on well from a long way/back, and would have fully extended the winner if she had begun better. EXCITING HACK CONTEST. AUTOPAY BEATS Z A RENE. A wonderful finish in tho Spring Hack Handicap saw the first four horses pass the post almost in line, Autopay gaining tho verdict by hall a head from Zarene. ['omp, witli H Gray in the saddle, was made favourite, and there was also solid support for Autopay and Brilliant Light. There was some delay at the post. Arrowzone being very fractious and breaking tho tapes. Eventually a good start was effected, Baskier and Arrowzone being quickly in the lead from Huntingdon. Tar Baby. Autopay and Taranto. Huntingdon and Autopay assumed command at tho top and they were the leaders into the straight from Baskier, Taranto, Pomp and Zarene. Once in line for home the leaders were all under pressure, and Autopay just withstood a strong challenge from Zarene to win by half a head Huntingdon was another half head back third, a head in front of Pass On. Baskier was fifth, followed by Brilliant Light, I'otnp and Tur Baby

Autopay registered a meritorious performance. but he wa.- a shade lucky to beat Zarene. who received a slight check halfway down the straight. This just made the difTerenco between winning and losing. Pomp again began slowly, and could not finish on after making a brilliant run on the outside in the middle stages. Huntingdon ran his best race and his turn is not far away. Baskier and Pass On also went well, and they should win when tho class is just a shade weaker.

luminary makes amends. CONVINCING HURDLES WIN. When heavily backed on the first day Luminary failed his supporters by unseating his rider at the first fence In tho Gonville Hurdles ho was again in strong demand, and went out a good favourite over Make L'p. This time he made no mistake and finished on strongly to win well. Make Up and Opa led for over a furlong. when Luminary took up the running to show the way past the stands to Opa. Royal Acre. Make Up and Nukumai. Running along tho back Luminary was steadied and" Royal Acre then assumed command, while Nukumai moved up smartly into third place. Nearing the tjirn Luminary ran up to Royal Acre again and they led into the .straight from Nukumai Make Up and Avro. Onco over tho last fence Luminary drew out to score b.v two and a-haif lengths from Royal Aero, who beat Avro by a head. Nukumai was fourth, succeeded by Make Up and Opa. The winner was well handled by L. Dulieu and came home very strongly. Royal Acre ran another solid race and so did Avro, who was not at all well ridden. Nukumai showed some dash in tho middle stages, only to fade away when tho pressuro was applied.
