THE PURSUIT OF HEALTH.
Sir, —Dr. Robert Hutchison's paper read at the Winnipeg Conference of the B.M.A. is getting a wider publicity than it deserves. Fortunately, there arc other doctors of much higher repute, such as Sir Arbuthnol Lanes, (late King's physician), who are less biassed and who openly assert, that moro at ten tit??, should bo paid to the dieting of patients and less operations and drugging. The average person of mature intelligence is getting to<realiso how his health and future happiness and freedom from worry is largely dependent upon u certain amount of consideration and restraint in the. matter of diet and deep breathing. "What is one man's food is another man's poison," but at tho same time there are certain recognised health facts that apply all,-such as ilio undoubted and proved advantage of wholemeal over white bread; (lie clogging effect on the stomach of sweets and liquid foods; tho eating at odd times spoiling one's powers of food assimilation, causing acidosis; active exercises, combined with the eating of foods rich in vitamins at fairly regular intervals. The doctor would have.us ignore the importance of fresh air and deep breathing exercises, which oxygenate tho blood and strengthen tho lung power I can speak feelingly in this direction. It is 32 years since I developed consumption in a virulent form and was given three months to live. I concentrated on deep breathing, aban doned tea-drinking and sweets and eating at odd times. Had unlimited supplies of wholemeal bread, cod-liver oil, milk. Also ate freely of cheese in conjunction with apples and tomatoes and in a year's time had quite recovered and served in tho South African War. The late Dr. Purdy, who passed me as fit, was astonished at my chest expansion of 7^in. (34-41 A). Now, at the age of 60, I feel stronger and better than ever before; never feel tired or weary, either mentally or physically, arid never worry, .1 am sure that Dr. Hutchison's views are not shared by many local medical men. Full of Vitamins.
