WIRELESS TELEPHONY.

AUSTRALIA TO NEW ZEALAND. PRELIMINARY TESTS. SERVICE EXPECTED SHORTLY. [rnoM oun ron respondent.] SYDNEY, Sept. 4. Preliminary tests indicate that very shortly tho wireless telephony servico between Australia and New Zealand should bo ready for public use. A few weeks ago Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia), Ltd., manufactured and despatched to the older of the New Zealand Government the necessary equip mont for the Now Zealand end of tho wireless telephone. This has now been installed and tests are being made with a view to adjusting tho transmitting and receiving equipment. Tho first conversations, says Mr. E. T. Fisk, managing director of Amalgamated Wireless, have been very satisfactory and in a very littlo whilo tho apparatus will be adjusted and tuned to givo tho best results.

The system used is similar to that adopted in tho wireless telephone service between Australia and London, i'lie transmission from Sydney originates at Pennant Ilills and tho voico of tho person speaking in New Zealand is received at the Amalgamated Wireless station at La Perouse. The New Zealand transmitter is situated in Wellington.

Although the reception and transmis siou of the wireless telephone conversation are carried out by Amalgamated Wireless, the co-operation of the Postal Department is necessary in order that telephone subscribers may be able to speak from their own homes through the departmental telephone exchanges. When tho New Zealand-Australia servico is established New Zealandors will be able to speak to Great Britain and Europe, using the link already provided between Sydney and London.
