DIRECT OVERSEAS SHIPPING. VISIT BY STEAMER lONIC. [llY TELEGRAM!.—OWX COI'.HESI'ONDENT.] MEW PLYMOUTH. Suuday. That apparently tho port of New Plymouth has the confidence of the shipping companies was the comment made by Mr. 0. E. Bellringer, chairman of tho New Plymouth Harbour Board, upon tho visit of the mail steamer lonic, which has aimed at New Plymouth from Lvttelton to lift dairy produce and meat for the Homo markets. With the arrival of tho lonic a new record in gross tonnage will bo set for the port. The previous record was Held bv the Mataroa.
Mr. Bellringer said that previously shipments of dairy produco from New Plymouth to such vessels as the lonic bad been taken coastwise. However, last year over 80 per cent, of the produco sent from New Plymouth was by direct shipment.
