They are compiled by tho Quotations Committee, Srnithfield. To arrive at tho equivalent ex-ship values ono farthing per pound should bo deducted from the prices quoted below. Interesting information concerning tho growing, marketing and distribution of tho fruit and produce of the islands Of tho Pacific is contained in a booklet, "From Southern Seas," recently issued by Turners and Growers, Limited. Tho company is the biggest importer of Island and Australian fruit in New Zealand The principal imports aro bananas from Fiji, oranges, bananas, tomatoes and : coconuts from the Cook Islands, and man darin and Valencia oranges from New South Wales and South Australia. Tho booklet includes a great deal of information concerning the activities of the firm and there arc a number of attractive iHustrations. RUSSIAN COMPETITION.
CARGO SHIPS CHARTERED. (Received September 1-1, 6.45 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 13. A cargo vessel of 25,000 tons was chartered yesterday to bring wheat from Russia to supplement tho 62,000 tons rf Italian shipping engaged earlier in tho week. It is understood that plans are being matured for intense competition later in tho month. A comparison of yesterday's sales of parcels show that Australian brought 31s and South Russian samples 30s 3d to 30s.
The Manchester correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says: "It is not, dump ing, because Russia does not compete with British grain, but her wheat is classed with American hard wheat."
A leading Liverpool broker says Russia is, supplying the deficiency due to'a bad crop in Argentina. Russia is keeping down prices against the American and Canadian pools. Otherwise prices might soar. BRITISH GRAIN TRADE. UNITED STATES MARKET. WASHINGTON. Sept. 12. The President, Mr. Hoover, was told by representatives of tho British grain trade to-day that unless American markets for British goods are left open through moderate tariffs, the reciprocal market abroad will be endangerod. A delegation representing tho Co-opera-tive Wholesale Society of Britain was presented to Mr. Hoover by tho British Ambassador, Sir Ronald Lindsay, and Mr. Herbert Bodman, president of tho New York Produce Exchange. It in-cluded-Mr. Robert Fleming and Mr. Joseph Uradshaw, directors tif tho society. In recent, years, the visitors told Mr. Hoover, enormous political pressure had been put upon British merchants to buy Ernpiro goods.
