Of a total of 24,250 cars in uso in Ceylon on May 31, 1930, 8296 were of British and 11,226 of American manufacture.

It is said that in New York abandoned motor-cars are collected at the rato of 1000 a month, so little is tho demand for second-hand vehicles.

Stop and let tho road hog pass, It hardly takes a minute; Your car starts off again intact, And, better still, you're in it.

" It's a pretty rich farming country out your way, isn't it ?" Yes, you never saw so many filling stations to the acre."

Sums approximating £276,000,000 were advanced by finance companies of tho United States during the current calendar year for automobile purchases.

It was reported at a meeting of the council of the A.A.A. during tlie week that Patrol S. Ringer had enrolled 1068 new members during tho past year.

The famous racing car, the " Golden Arrow," which will be the chief exhibit at tho forthcoming All-British (U.K.) Motor Olympia, will arivo in Auckland shortly.

Teacher: "Willie, give me the defini tion of ' home.' "

Willie: " Home is where part of the family waits until the others are through with the car."

" Our patrols are evidently doing good work, and a largo proportion of cars on the road now have their lights properly adjusted," said Mr. A. Grayson, tho president of the council of thfc A.A.A., at a meeting during tho week.

There is a particularly deep pot-hole in the filling at the edge of the left-hand tram rail on the inward track in Symonds Street, just below Grafton Bridge. This hole has been causing annoyance for several days, and urgently requires filling.

Tho allegedly dangerous driving of certain motorists near the Mangere aerodrome on Saturday afternoons and Sundays was tho subject of a complaint received at a meeting of the council of the A.A A. during the week. The complaint was referred to the Manukau County Council.

"WIZARD" SMITH'S CAR.

CONSTRUCTION COMMENCED.

Construction of the racing car with which Mr. Norman " Wizard" Smith hopes to lower the world's land speed record at the Ninety-Milo Beach early next year, was commenced at Harkness and Hillier's engineering works at Sydney on August 28. The first rivet was driven by the Hon. J. A. who explained to a representative gathering that the engine to be used would have almost double the power of tho motor of the late Sir Henry Segrave's "Golden Arrow." When finished, the car would weigh over Zh tons.. The design, which was evolved by Mr. Don. Harkness, has been approved by the British Government, and Smith hopes to attain a speed of 300 m.p.h. in his new machine. Mr, Harkness was also responsible for the design and building of the " Anzac," the Rolls-Royce-Cadillac car which Smith used at . tho Ninety-Mile Beach early this year. The engine for Smith's car is a supercharged Napier motor, similar to that which bettered tho Schneider Trophy speed by eight miles an .hour some months ago. It had been loaned to Smith by the Air Ministry, as a result of representations made by the Federal Government, and details of its design are jealously guarded.

ITALIAN GRAND PRIX.

The Italia# Grand Prix, which was run last Sunday, resulted in a win for Varzi, who averaged 150.4 kilometres an -hour. Arcangeli was second, and Maserati third. The three first men drovo Maserati cars. Varzi also won the event last year, and in the meantime has become tho champion oT Italy. In the 1000-mile race held in Italy early in April, Varzi finished second, and won the 21st Targa Florio, one of the most gruelling road-races in the world, shortly afterwards. Maserati was among the first half dozen in the Targa Florio. Varzi is a brilliant performer, and has taken part yi motor-cycle races both in England and on the Continent.

KEEPING THE OAR NEW.

Paint or enamel should not be applied to spots on fenders where rust exists. First remove tho rust with sandpaper, then give tho surface a thorough dusting and follow with a coat of air-dry enamel. Painting over rust will not produce satisfactory results. Body squeaks can sometimes be eliminated by the application of penetrating oil, especially around tho bolts and at other points where slight motion is suspected. Petrol never should bo used to clean tho lacquered or enamelled finish of a car* It dulls tho highly-polished surface.
