BX MAJOR TENACB. The following pretty problem in defenco is worth working out ;
At love score Y deals and bids one no-trump; B no bid, Z two spades, and all pass.
The first four tricks are played thus, winning cards being starred: —
A Y B 7, 1. HJ HA* H 3 112 2. SK* S2 S7 RQ 3. H 7 H 5 UK* HQ , 4. S4* HlO H 6 D 5 How should A continue tlio hand? Hero is a problem in minor suit play
1 At love score A deals, and bids one heart; Y, two diamonds; B, no bid; Z, three clubs, and all pass. At trick one A leads the king of hearts; Y plays the two, B the seven, and Z the four. At trick two A leads the aco of hearts; Y plays the three. B the five, and Z the eight. At trick three A leads the nine of hearts; Y plays the six. B the queen, and Z ruffs with the five of clubs. How should Z now play the combined hands ? Last week's problem was as follows:
At love score Z deals, and bids one spade; A, two diamonds; Y, two spades, and all pass. A leads the king of diamonds, followed by tho ace. How should Z play? « S
Solution: 'Z's chance of game depends on finding the adverse trumps divided four in one hand and three in the other. If he ruffs the second round of diamonds he puts himself definitely under the oppo-, nents. He must, therefore, discard on the diamonds until dummy is exhausted of the suit. He can then ruff in dummy, if the opponents go further with the suit, without weakening his own trumps. But whether Z gets the lead with a diamond ruff ,'jn dummy, or a trump, or the ace of clubs, his play is the same. He leads out four trumps to exhaust the opponents, and then runs the hearts. If the trumps fall and neither opponent is void of hearts he will then get game. ✓ '
