HOWICK INTERESTS.

RATES FOR YEAR STRUCK*

A total rate of 2 l-10d in the pound has been struck by the Howick Town Board, which held a special meeting to consider the rates for the coining year. The total rate last year was 1 7-8 d in the pound. On the motion of the finance committee, the following rates were struck: —• General rate, ljd in the pound; hospital and charitable aid rate, l-sd; lighting, 1-8 d; Panmure-How ick highway loan, 2-sd; Picton Street improvement loan, l-Bd. It was not necessary to strike a rate to cover the interest and sinking fund on the water supply loan, as it was expected that increased revenue would ha sufficient to meet tins year s charges.

The clerk reported that last year a rebate of 5 per cent, on the general rate account was allowed it it was paid within 30 days of demand and £650 was received during the period. It, was decided to allow a similar concession this year.
