AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS

MATCH AGAINST KENT. VISITORS OUT FOR 181. HOME TEAM 87 FOR FOUR. B.v Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, August 27. Tlie Australian cricketers to day commenced a match against Kent at Canterbury. The teams were:— Kent.—Chapman, Legge, Brian, Knott, Todd, Hardirjge, Woolley, Freeman, Ashdown, Ames and Wright. Australia.—Woodfull, Ponsford, Bradman, Fairfax, Jackson, Grimmett, a'Beckett, llichardson, Hurwood, Wall and Walker. Woodfull won the toss and the Australians baited first. Woodfull and Ponsford scored 39 in steady fashion, when the captain started too slowly for a short single and was thrown out. Without any addition to the score Freeman, who has been remarkably successful this season, got Ponsford's wicket, Ashdown taking a wonderful catch at square leg. Jackson and Bradman gave a poor exhibition and both were out before luncheon. An inspection of the wicket revealed a slope, 011 which Freeman was making the hall come in sharply from leg. Richardson hit brightly, but Fairfax was out to a full toss, with the score 98 for five wickets.

A full ground of spectators saw the debacle continue. Richardson drove powerfully, hitting seven fours in 65 minutes. An amazing catch by Chapman at third slip sent back Grimmett, who stopped to congratulate Chapman. Hurwood, who batted with skill and confidence, severely punished Freeman, who was taken off. Hurwood batted for 55 minutes and hit seven fours.

The Australians have now been dis missed twice iij succession for under 200 runs. The county opening batsmen, batting soundly, put on 71 runs before Grimmett got their wickets. Woolley and •Ames, both good batsmen, failed before the attack of Wall. Details of the scores are as follow s:— AUSTR A LI A. —First Innings. Total for four wickets . r ..87 BE ADMAN'S ACTIVITIES. VIEW OF THE MANAGER. OTHER PLAYERS SAY NOTHING. LONDON, August 28. Don Bradman laugbejl when told at Canterbury of the rumour in circulation to the effect that he would be carpeted on his return to Australia for alleged breaches of the agreement with the Australian Board of Control. "Nobody can lie 'put on the mat' until he arrives home." he said. "I can only be put there if the manager, Mr. W. L. Kelly, so recom mends. I have heard nothing about, it." Mr. Kelly said he could not well pass over Bradman's apparent defiance of the Board of Control.

Bradman's team mates say nothing, but it is believed that naturally they feel that Bradtnan's great success has enabled him to act in a manner in which the others dare not. Bradman is a keen business man, and has been careful so far not to write about recent matches, so possibly a less serious view will be taken of his action. However, it is difficult to reconcile Bradman's cinema appearances and his journalistic activities with the formidable contract which the players signed. It is anticipated that in 1934 the team will be bound by an even more severe undertaking.
