DEMANDS ON BUSINESS PEOPLE.

£ir, —Your correspondent " Onehunga" complains of what lie considers inequitable demands made upon the shopkeepers and , business men in the matter of collections. In particular, he attacks the Onehunga Ex-Servicemen's Club in its effort to raise money to alleviate the acute distress which undoubtedly is operating among ex-service-men in this district as well as iri others. That there should be need ito raise funds for this purpose is a. matter of evei* lasting shame to the country for which the ex-soldier fought. Possibly " Onehunga" overlooks this fact and should realise that the responsibility not having been shouldered by the country an a whole, someone must assist the cause hence "Onehunga" was approached. The mock court to which your correspondent refers "fined", one person 7s 6d (and he did not pay a penny thereof), and then it was onlj in a spirit of levity. The fines for the most part did not leach above the modest one shilling and the like, and the prisoners" without exception were the happiest lot I have seen placed in the dock/ (Jur thanks are duo to them V-for their timely assistance. Their efforts resulted in raising a goodly sum, which will go a long way in providing the ex-digger who is up against it—and unfortunately they are legion —yith honest work. _ More power to those ladies and other .citizens who did veoman service and which will be carried on by the members of the club irrespective of the protests of your correspondent. N. A- Ching, Hon. Organiser, Onehunga Ex-iervica-men's Club.
