PROMISING THREE-YEAR-OLD. COMMANDANT'S FIRST RACE. [BY TELEGRAPH- —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] "WELLINGTON. Sunday. There was not a groat deal of interest in the Hawke's Bay Hunt Meeting on Saturday, but as was expected tho presence of several well-bred three-yoar-olds was a decided attraction. Mr. 'l. H. Lowry's Aus-tralian-bred colt Commandant, by Legionnaire—Bees in Ambor, who cost 7-5 guineas as a yearling in Sydney, wns having his first race when ho started in tho maiden event. Ho was expected to run well and wns established favourite. Ho duly won, but only by a head, and ho would have been defeated had ho not proved himself a very gamo colt under pressure. Commandant is a woll-topped and nicelyfurnished colt, fairly well forward and ho looks liko developing into a good one. Altnough it was his first time at tho barrier in public lie began well, showed speed and finally stamina. Commandant is freely engaged in important races for three-year-olds this season. Two other throo-year-oldn which attracted attention in tho maidon raco were Nea Lap and Sympathetic, who were also making their debut in public Phar Lap'B sister has furnished, but sho displayed no dash ill her race. It is probable that she will go over to Sydney It,tor on. Sympathetic, by Martian from Sweet Charity, is a nice lilly end sho showed some speed in tho race, but was not in condition to run on, ladinrr out in the straight. When moro seasoned she will do much better. A largo number of two-ypar-olds were given short sprints down the straight, going in pairs or threes. There wns no semblanco of racing, but several moved nicely. Among them was Bozy, n filly by Luoullus from Prosy, Toy Girl, il filly by Cockpit from Hula Girl: and Actaeon. a gelding by Hunting Song from Crisis. The lattor is a brother to False Scent, of whom good things were expected until ho went in the wind.

THE DANNEVIRKE RACES. HORSES REHANDICAPPED. [BY TELEGKA PII. —TJVESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTO.N NORTH, Sunday. Tho following rehandicaps have been doclarcd for tho Dannevirko Racing Club's meeting:—Glongarry Hurdlos.—Wbakauo, IG.O. Noaglo Handicap.—Shrowd, 7.6. UmutaorOa Handicap.—Repay. 8.2. Dannevirke Steeples.—Risk. 10.13. Harris Hack Handicap.—Repay. 8.3. OVERWEIGHT NO OBSTACLE. WAIMURI DISPLAYS PROMISE, When raced an a two-year-old lasjt season Waimuri attracted attention by displaying pace in a couple of races, and it was thought that she had a chance of winning at Avondale in the autumn. However, she failed lo realiso expectations that day, and backers were not keen to support her when produced for tho fii'Bt time this season in tho Sylvia Park Handicap at tho Pakuranga Hunt Meeting, with tho result that she was allowed lo win at good odds. It did not look good business to back Waimuri when eho was saddled with 9lb, overweight, but this apparently did not hinder her much, for sho reached tho front quickly and ran tho pevon furlongo out solidly, to v/in pleasingly. Waimuri belongs to a- family tlint has been represented by some speedy sprinters, and she should provo very useful indeed if she goes on improving like she has done lately. Sho is by Valkyrian out of Wuirurapa, hence a half-Bister to Auriculus and Mauriaena, and promises to bo moro successful than either of her relatives, for she will probably run on belter than either ot those mares. Waimuri was bred by her owner, Mr. J» AVulters, whoso colours wore carried with a good deal of success years ago by Goldsizo,
