SUM OF £6O STOLEN.
LOSS OF MONEY FROM HUT. PUBLIC WORKS CAMP THEFT. The loss of nearly £6O in notes from the hut of a worker at the Public Works Department's camp at Purewa, Mr. Georgo Henry Mist, was reported to the police yesterday. The theft was said to have been committed while Mr. Mist was playing the bagpipes at the outskirts of tho camp. Mr. Mist, who had been employed at tho camp for the past three years, said ho received £l7 in wages on Wednesday evening, while ho also had in his hut £42 in notes for tho past week. Much of this money was the property of his father, who was working in the North and who had sent the money to his son to bank, as ho was not near to a bank. After finishing work on Wednesday afternoon Mr. Mist received £l7 in wages and this ho said he placed with his own savings and his father's money on tho top of a small trunk which he kept in tho hut under his bed. As is bis frequent custom, in the evening ho went for a walk over tho hills near by, playing the' bagpipes, leaving about 6.30 and returning to tho hut about an hour later. On leav ing the hut ho closed tho door and at no time was ho very far distant from tho place. Some tirno after Mr. Mist returned ho looked in tho trunk to mako cortain that tho money was still there and ho found that it had disappeared.
