FINANCES OF THAMES.
REDUCTION IN VALUATIONS. RATES SLIGHTLY INCREASED. [BY TELEGIIAI'H. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Thursday. The Thames Borough Council held a long meeting last evening to consider the estimates and strike the rates for the year It was mentioned that recent reductions in valuations had reduced the revenue of the town, and in consequence it would be necessary to increase tho rates this year to balance the budget. Owing to tho recent reductions in valuations made by the Assessment Court, tho unimproved valuations of the borough have sunk from £282,635 to £273,542. Last year tho total general and special rates were 19 l-20d, and in ordinary circumstances it would be necessary to strike nn extra rate of lgd to provide for tho reduced revenue of £1567. Tho council after consideration decided to transfer £1137 from tho profits of tho electricity department, thus leaving only £4Z>O to "bo found. This necessitated the addition of gd to tho rate, ihaking tho total 19 17-40 d. Another factor is the increaso in tho hospital contribution and tho heavy total of outstanding rates.
