POLICE COURT NEWS.
THEFT OF SUITCASE. MAN WHO REPENTED. A charge of breaking and entering a house in Freeman's Bay and stealing a suitcase and contents valued at £4 was preferred against James Ne\vald. aged 40, clerk and labourer, in tho Police Court yesterday. On tho suggestion of SubInspector Shanahan tho charge was reduced to one of common theft, the accused pleading guilty. The sub-inspector stated that on Mon day evening Newald entered an empty house and carried away a suitcase, which he took home. The following day he repented of his action and put llie suitcase on a hawker's van with instructions for it to he returned. The accused was not of the highest mentality and had been convicted in the past for attempted suicide and drunkenness. " I will give you a chance to go straight," said tho magistrate. Mr. F. K. Hunt. " You are convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months." A commercial traveller, Frank James Price, aged 33, admitted stealing two sums of money totalling £4 12s 6d, the property of his former employers, Technical Publications, Limited, Wellington. In entering convictions without penalty, tho magistrate said ho would take into consideration tho fact that Iho accused had been in custody on remand for 14 da vs. Henry Samuel Johnson, aged do, pleaded guilty to a charge of _ being a rogue and vagabond and with being found without lawful excuse within enclosed premises in Pitt Street on Wednesday evening. -On the application of tho police the accused was remanded for a week to enable further investigations to bo made.
