Sir, —Your correspondent "S.S.'I. ' > s apparently ignorant of the tact- that prior (o 192G not a word of criticism was evi-r uttered as to the conduct of (he examines in marking the matriculation paper?. 'l!i-> fashion Jf attacking our matriculation was only a dodge introduced 10 bolster up the attempt, to introduce neevdi'-in;;. As a teacher with many years' experience 1 have always found that the be.*'prepared pupils have always been st'<v-es«-ful; certainly, I have never seen a cas" where the "best fail and the worst pa«. There is no reason why examiner s assistants, provided they arcj graduates, should have had previous teao.'iing experience. Matriculation ha- nothing to do with schools and any man a degree is quite competent to checkj answers. J'is curious that in New Zealand alone systematic attacks have been made on out entrance examination. However, u tji« recommendations of the Kecesa Committee arc adopted, and thc'.v represent admirably tlie crude ideas of men who neveentered a college or passed a university examination, "S.S. 17' and ethers oi hi* tvpo will have nothing to complain oThere will be no examinations, no academic dignity, no chartered universi > . nothing but an .educational chaos wok* will expose tho Dominion to the no> c ■ and contempt of every university in ■ Empire. .
