BADMINTON.
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. OPENING DAY OF TOURNAMENT, PROGRAMME WELL ADVANCED. Good progress was made with the Auckland Provincial badminton championship tournament which commenced at Scots IIa;ll yesterday. There were some good matches in the men's championship singles, although most of the results went according to established form. J. Southon reached the semi-finals with wins over Ernst and Philson. He was not impressive against Ernst, who took the middle game with good smashing, but improved against Philson and held the lead throughout. In the ladies' singles there were two surprise results, Miss A. Ellett and Miss I. Solomon failing to win their matches. Miss M. Waters accounted for Miss Solomon la a well-played match, while splendid clearing off both wings combined with good anticipation and remarkable agility gave Miss Majorie Macfarlane a well-deserved win over Miss Ellett in the best and closest gama of the evening. Misses Kamsay and Isewton reached the semi-finals without being seriously threatened. In the ladies' doubles, Misses K. and M. Waters accounted for Misses Ramsay and Darling in a fairly even match. Miss K. Waters put her side well ahead in the final game with a break of 10 points on her service. There were no outstanding matcheß in the men's doubles, the leading pairs coming through in each cape without being threatened.
