NORFOLK ISLAND NEWS.
;OLD "PITCAIRNER'S" DEATH. [feoji our own correspondent.] NORFOLK ISLAND, July 28. Still another of tho little band of "PitCairners" passed away on July 26. Miss Emily Young ("Aunt Nin") -was born on Pitcairn Island on December 26, 1855, and camo with her. parents in the Moray- . shire in .1856. The deceased was of a most kindly disposition and at her charming and historic homo on tho Cascades , Road bad extended a cordial welcome to numberless visitors to the island. Throughout her life she had enjoyed excellent health until a few days before her death. Three men and four women aro all that now remain of the "Pitcairners." The steamer Maeambo was docked while tit Sydney and then made a smart run j to Norfolk Island, calling at Lord Howe Island en roft'te. She brought 180 tons of cargo and 26 passengers. She left f-ho following day for the New Hebrides. Much interest is centred in . the run- ■ ning of the New Zealand steamer HiknTangi. Should a regular service bo established tho consignments of fruit, etc., to Auckland will steadily increase. Norfolk Island has large ; blocks of idle lands which will produce excellent crops of potatoes in Juno and July. The old-Wshioned plan of sanding a newly-painted building whilo tho paint is still fresh has had a great vogue on Norfolk Island and the ;white coral sand used gives the buildings so treated a handsome appearance. The process also appears to be highly effective in proserving both, tho paint and tho timber. Tho public school building and the master's residence are striking examples. Erected over 24 years ago, the coating of paint and sand they received then has never been Renewed, and still looks quite good and fresh. They aro now receiving their second coating. , .• .
