HOCKEY SEASON.
MATCH AGAINST WAIKATO.
AUCKLAND TEAM'S PROSPECTS.
THE CAGE-BROWN TROPHY. The postponement of Saturday's matches means thnt the Auckland Hockey Association will find it almost impossible to play all its fixtures as at present arranged unless an extension of time can be granted by tho Girls' Athletic Association, which controls tho Remuera grounds. A day may bo saved by playing some of tho Devonport, Shield fixtures on August 23, when the represent ativo match with Waikato is scheduled to be. played. At present, however, it does not seom likely that this will bo arranged. The selector of tho Auckland team, Mr. W. Nov,-sham, has boon set back to some extent by Saturday's postponements, but ho has already in view a. selection of players from whom lie oxpccts to pick a sound team. In his opinion, tho team, while not containing so many brilliant players as in the past, will bo as strong as any team Auckland has put on tho field for this gamo in recent years. Mr. Ncwsham has also seen tho Waikato team in action and anticipates a keen struggle.
The list of possibles for the team has been narrowed down by the fact that Mount Eden is sending two teams away to Thames, on that date to play annual matches with tho Thames-Hauraki Association's teams. The junior team, consisting of players under 20, will play a similar team from tho Thames Association for the Gage-Brown trophy, which Mount Eden holds at present. A senior gamo will also be played. The Mount Eden players will take down with them a cup which they propose to present unconditionally to the association for internal competition. Subsidiary to the cup will be two smaller trophies, to ba presented outright to the two leading players of tho teams .in tho final match for the cup. Great interest will be taken in tho chief game at Remuera on Saturday—the match botween University and St. Luko's. University now has 16 point 3 and St. Luke's, Mount Eden and North Shoro have eacli 14 points. The result of the match will mean either that. University has won the cup or that University, North Shoro and Mount Eden will have a close contest for the winning place. Since St. Luko's has a bye in the seventh nnd final round, it cannot very well hope to 1 secure the trophy. University will meet Wesley in the final round and this game is likely to result in a victory for the former team. Mount Eden's further two fixtures arc with University Whippets', and North Shore, tho last-named team having a match with Wesley for the other of its two remaining games. The results of tho recent referees' examinations conducted by Mr. 11. Watts have been received from Wellington. All the candidates were successful. Messrs. H. Hannam and E. A. Stainton, of Whangarei, and Mr. P. Doolan, of Paeroa, have received B certificates in the itheoretical tests, and, Mr. Doolan, who underwent in addition a practical test, was successful I in this. .
