WATERFRONT ROAD.
Sir, —The deputation to the City Council last Thursday, re waterfront road, consisted principally of Kohimarama residents and interested property owners. The people of St. Heliers depend on the opening of the waterfront road to relieve the financial depression of the district, and are' not disposed to wait five years, as a Kohi representative suggested. Ivohi is pleading that the beach will be ruined. The plea is not questionable but absurd. When the wall at St. Heliers was erected one of these gentlemen prophesied that the children would fall down the wall at high tide and be drowned, because the beach would be washed away. There is more sand at St. Heliers than there was before the wall was erected. If the council has to take a small portion of the beach, it is better to do that than to have a road which would be a death trap, and that would be the case if the council deviates from its present plan. At. any rate, the district i:s not prepared to have its rates increasod by the acquiring of private property, and making the road more costly. These are times when utility and economy must take first place and be considered before sentiment. The work of the City Council in regard to the planning and laying out of the waterfront road will always stand as a monument of efficiency and beauty. Why spoil the uniformity of the scheme ? Pro Bono Publico.
