AFTER TWELVE YEARS.
THE PERFECT BATMAN.
" As I was entoring a Government offico in Whitehall tho other day," writes a correspondent of a London journal a one-armed beinodalled messenger clicked his hoels together and addressod mo by name in a crisp military voico.
" For a momont I was dumbfounded. * Good-morning, cap'n, ho said. Any buttons or boots to bo cleaned 1 ' Thon light camo and I rocognised him as my wartime batman.
" In the past 12 years I had travelled in many lands. I scarcoly realised I was homo again until George, tho batman, brought tho years crowding back. George wears tho D.U.M and M.M.. though he has lost an arm and the fingers of his remaining hand. As ho explained during a fund of reminiscence, he has held his post in Whitehall for tho duration of the peace.
" I owe Georgo a special debt of gratitude. There was a day when an officer of high rank described me as tho best-turned-out man in the Army Corps. That was no compliment to mo. I raise my hat to tho porfect batman."
