Hanussen was, however, arrested "i Teplitz, and though witnesses were forthcoming who alleged they had been deceived, an equal number spoke of 1"' extraordinary gifts. In order to put him to the test the judge ordered that tlii Court should be strictly guarded by gendarmes with fixed bayonets, and the neighbouring rooms searched for an accomplice. ' Hanussen was set to find a concealed object; to give the characteristics ol three persons from specimens of their writing; to do the same with two specimens of writing in the possession of the Court; and to describe the fate of a man i>y study of an associated object. As soon as the object was liiJtlen Hanussen ran out of the room and returned within ono minute with a key which had been concealed. He gave a correct description of three well-known personalities when their writing was snnmitted, nnd bo succeeded equally wel with the other tests. 3n one of these li-> gave a description of a motor accident. Hanussen was acquitted and taken in triumph to his hotel.
