PERFORMANCES RECALLED

LONG SERVICES TO RUGBY

The six members of the New Zealand selection committee have all had notable careers in representative Rugby and, in most cases, their names have been identified prominently -with (he game in New Zealand for many years. Following are particulars: Mr. E. McKenzie (Wairarapa) is chairman of the committee. Hn was fullback for the Wairarapa representative side for many years and occupied the same position in the North Island, which was defeated by the South Island in tho famous game in 1902. In this game the North Island scored 14 points in the first spell, but in the second half, 1". Roberts replaced the South Island halfback, P. Harvey, who had been injured, and the South Island team finally won by 20 to 14. Mr. McKenzie has been sole selector for the Wairarapa. Rugby Union at. intervals since 1903, and ho, has been a member of the New Zealand selection committee since 1924. Ho was also a prominent referee and controlled a number of Ranfurly Shield matches, including the famous game in 1913, when Taranaki challenged Auckland and was successful by 14 points to 11. Another match which he controlled was tho first test between tho All Blacks and the Springboks at, Dunedin in 1921. Mr. McKenzio has been a member of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union sim e 1922. The Spiral Kick.

Mr. X. McK< •nzic, a brother of Mr. E. McKenzie, played representative football for Wairarapa and Hawke s Bay. Ho played in tlie. North Island country team, which drew with a strong Auckland side in 1911, each side scoring eight points. In his playing days ho was ono of tho greatest exponents of tho spiral kick that New Zealand Rugby has over known. Mr. McKenzie was a North Island selector in 1923 and was elected to tho New Zealand selection committee the following year. He has occupied this position ever since. In addition, Mr. McKenzie has been 6ole selector lor the Ilawke's Bay Rugby Union since 1916.

Career as an All Black.

Mr. G. W. Nicholson, the Auckland member of tho committee, played for the Fonsouby Club in the early days of the present century and as coach and selector his name is still linked with his old club. He represented Auckland from 1901 to 1909 and won All Black honours in 1903, 1904, 1905 and 1907. He was a member of tho famous 1905 All Blanks which lost only one game in the tour of Britain, and on this lour, bis clubmate, the late 1). Gallaher, captained tho New Zealand team. Mr. Nic.hols.oti has been sole selector for the. Auckland Rugby Union on several occasions since his retirement from playing, and has also served at intervals on the New Zealand selection committee.

An Otago Representative. Mr. A. McDonald, the Otago representative, was also a member of the 1906 All Black team. He played l'«r Otago for many years, and was captain of tho New Zealand side which toured California in 1913. He has been a member of the selection committee sinco last year. Mr. W. Maxwell, Canterbury, played his representative football for that province. He was a light, but exceptionally able forward, and played for the South Island in 1912. He has been a a member of the selection committee sinco last year. Mr. A. Geddes has for many years been prominent in Invercargill Rugby circles, chiefly in an administrative capacity. He has played a leading part in placing the Southland Rugby Union on a sound footing and has been a member of the selection committee since 1924.

Prior lo the present tour a British team had failed to inflict defeat on a New Zealand fifteen. No test match was played by Stoddart's team. One was plaved with Bedell Sivriglil's combination, which was beaten, 9—3. 1 hree tests were decided against the Anglo-Welsh side.
