WINE BOTTLE LABELS.
CHARGE AGAINST PUBLICAN
MAGISTRATE DISMISSES CASE
A charge of purchasing labels not bearing proper marks, preferred against E. C. Foote, the proprietor of the Globe Hotel, I'apakura, was dismissed by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M-, in the Police Court yesterday.
"I he point is that imported liquors bottled in New Zealand must bear the words 'Bottled in New Zealand' on their containers," said Sub-Inspector Shanahan.
"It is becoming a common practice for licensees to omit to do this, and as a consequence purchasers are led to tlfink the liquor they buy is bottled in tl\e country of origin."
Defendant gave evidence that the labels had been sent by tho Spanish manufacturers, from whom ho had purchased a hogshead of wine. They cost nolhing extra, and were in tho post on the way to 111111 when one had been taken as a sample by a customs ollicer. He had used none on bottles, and had no intention of using them until lie had had printed slips showing that the wino lind been bottled in New Zealand. He had never before bought the wine from the vintners concerned in this case, and had no knowledge of what the labels were like until they reached him. Mr. 11. Kice, who represented defendant, claimed that there was no case to answer.
"There is not enough evidence for a conviction," said tho magistrate, in dismissing the charge.
