APPALLING DEATH ROLL.
WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION. POPULACE PANIC-STRICKEN. Details of a series of severe earthquakes in Southern Italy, with Naples near the centre of the disturbances, show that they have caused a widespread catastrophe. The shocks occurred on Wednesday between 1 a.m. and 3 p.m. Ten provinces were shaken and two towns and several villages are reported to have been destroyed. Many people were killed in their sleep. Communications with most of the stricken areas were dislocated, so that an accurate computation of the casualties has not yet beeD possible. That the dead number thousands, however, is indicated by the reports of various correspondents. Most of the victims were buried beneath debris. Tho people of Naples had a terrifying experience as the electric light failed, the darkness being broken only by fitful flares from Mount Vesuvius, which was active. A tidal wave added to the horror of tho experience. Equally harrowing scenes occurred elsewhere in the area affected and some of the survivors have become demented.
