CHARGE TWO YEARS OLD.
WATCH AND CHAIN TRACED. CONVICTION FOR RECEIVING. A charge two years old was preferred in tie Police Court yesterday against Summers Eeraika Edwards, aged 38, labourer. who was alleged 'to have received a watch and chain, valued at £ls, an July 50. 1928, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. After a farther charge cf stealing the watch and chain, tne property of John Henry Weymouth, on June 15, 1925. had been withdrawn bv the police, Mr. Aekins entered a plea of gnilty to the charge of receiving. Chief-Detective Hammond stated that two years ago accused had been dealt with bv the Court, for a series of thefts. There had been no evidence to bring against accused regarding the watch and chain, which could not be found at that time. It had since appeared and had been traced to accused. Edwards, who was at present on liberty on licence, was working nard. When he wanted to drink he was in the habit of stealing and nothing would stop him then. Counsel said accused had not toucned licsscr since his release four months ago. He was working hard :n a permanent position. which afrcrded him good prospects for the coming summer. If he went hack to prison he would lose his employment. The, magistrate. Mr. F. S. Hunt, convicted Edwards and ordered him to come cp for sentence if called on. and made an order for the return of the watch.
