GISBORNE ROAD ACCESS.
EFFECT OF HEAVY RAINS. MOTOR SERVICE DISORGANISED. [Br TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE. Wednesday. Heavy rain on Tuesday rendered the crossings on the main North Road impassable and passengers from Auckland and Rotorua were compelled to complete the journey to Gisborr.o by train. In view of tho necessity of using the Waikohu ford on account of tho collapse of tho Waihuka Bridge, it is not expocted that cars will be able to travel through from Gisborno to Motu for two or threo days, and until the ford again becomes passable tho one-day service to Auckland will have to bo suspended. In the meantime, travellers will leave Gisborno by tho afternoon train and proceed north by car the following morning after spending the night at Motu. Even if tho Waihuka Bridge had not been damaged, however, cars would have been unable to travel through to Gisborne yesterday afternoon, as the other crossings on tho road could not have been negotiated. Owing to tho fact that the Waikohu River takes considerablylonger to fall than at other fords on tho road, motor services will be subject to interruption in wet weather until the Waihuka Bridge is replaced.
