TO-DAY'S WEATHER, HERALD'S SPECIAL FORECAST. The following weather forecast for 24 hours from 7 a.m. to-day was supplied by Mr. H. M. Vincent last evening:—Fair to fine weather is indicated generally, with very cold nights and frosts inland, but temporatures will become milder shortly, accompanied by increasing cloudiness. A westerly depression is developing on tho south-west Tasman Sea and is likely to cause stormy weather over the Dominion after about 36 hours. Variable and moderate breezes, northerly to northeasterly winds, moderate to strong, prevailing shortly and freshening. Seas moderate. Local outlook: Fair to fine, hut with increasing cloudiness. Morning fog. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 30.301n. Midnight, Wednesday .. 30.151n. Temperatures in shade yesterday (to midnight)— Maximum. sGdog.; minimum, 43deg. GOVERNMENT REPORT. The Government meteorologist reported last evening as follows:—An anti-cyclone lias moved on to northern New Zealand. A vigorous and extensive depression of tho westerly type is centred over Tasmania. Indications are for moderate south-westerly winds north of Cape Egmont and Napier, veering later to northerly; elsewhere north-westerly. A northerly, freshening, and later reaching gale force from Cook Strait southward. Seas Rising south of Cape Eginont and off-shoro south of Castlepoint; otherwise smooth to moderate. Moderate to strong and freshening north-west winds in the eastern Tasman Sea. Seas moderate in the northern portion of tho Tasman Sea, but becoming rough in the southern portion. Weather cloudy and unsettled in tho western and southern districts of the South Island, with some rain. Elsewhere mainly fair, but more generally unsettled conditions probable after about 24 hours.
