YOUNG MAN SAVED IN LAKE.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] DU.NEDIN, Wednesday.
A few mornings ago a young man, Mr<R. J. MacKenzie, employed on Walter Peak station, nearly lost his life by drowning in Lake Wakatipu.
The steamer Ben Lomond had made her regular call at Beath Bay and as she was moving out again Mr. MacKenzie, who had gone on board to talk to a passen-i ger, made an attempt to jump back on the wharf. In doing so he fell into the lake, which is 20ft# to 25ft. deep at this spot. He was unable to swim and tha danger of his position was increased by, the easterly wind which was blowing and by the wash caused by the propeller c? the steamer.
In answer to an alarm raised by tlia group of people collected on the Miss Peggy MacKenzie, a daughter of Major P. MacKenzie, quickly removed her frock and swam out to Mr. MacKeiw zie's assistance. Gripping hold of his wrist, she struck back for the shallow; water, where her father and one of tha station workers were waiting to givd assistance.
Had ifc not been for Miss MacKenzie'3 pluck and presence of mind, a fatality; would have occurred. Miss MacKenzie only 18 years old. From an early age shcfJ has been a good swimmer.
