'J 1 10 potato market lias weakened, and quotations have eased from 2s 6d to 5s a ton for prompt and forward positions. Uiero are a low orders coming to hand, however, from Auckland, and other ports also aro showing moro activity. Tho next boat, the Waiinarino, will not leavo until Thursday or Friday. Growers arc not inclined to sell. 'J'iiey aro strong holders. Tho quotation to farmers on trucks is £4 to £4 2s 6d, but recently there have been olfers made from certain quarters of £4 5s and £4 10s. Thisro aro somo who believe that thore aro not as many potatoes available this year as in past years, and that tliero will bo a shortage. Tho oats market is fairly firm, with values unchanged. Local 13 grade Garlons are worth 4s, f.0.b., s.i., and local A grado Gartons about 4s Id, f.0.b., s.i. Southern quotations aro 3s lid for prompt A grade Gartons, and 3s 9J,d for B grado. Chaff for later delivery is not offering in much quantity, but there is not a great deal of inquiry for it. Tho market for onions is very dull. They are worth from £2 10s to £3 10s on trucks, according to quality. It is many years since business in small seeds lias been as dull as it is at present. CITIZENS' BUILDING SOCIETY.
PROFIT OF £1238 LAST YEAR. A profit of £1238 is shown in tho fifth annual report of the directors of the Citizens' Permanent Building and investment Society for tho year ended May 31. In commenting upon tho steady growth oi tho society at tho annual meeting this week, tho chairman, Mr. J. P. Stevenson, said tho profits each year allowed for tho payment of a half-yearly dividend at tho rate of 7 per cent, per annum, as well as for tho carrying of a substantial amount each year to reserve. TTo congratulated the society upon the success of its reduced rato of interest mortgage repayment table, which had boon in operation during tho past year. The reduction would mean a diminution of profits during tho coming year unless the reduction in interest was counterbalanced by a corresponding increase in tho total amount of mortgages. Tho amount lent on mortgage increased during the past year by £5026 to £28,143. An interim dividend of per cent, was paid in November, and the directors recommended that a further dividend of 3£ per cent, should be declared. This would ab. sorb £540, leaving a balance of £775. Tt was proposed that a sum of £l5O should be carried to the reserve account, increasing this to £650. Tho two properties appearing in the balance-sheet at £I2OO, off which £l5B had been written, were expected to be disposed of without further loss. Tho capital of the society, including an increase of £2585 during the year, is £15,428 15s. Deposits at call total £11,313. Tho report and balanco-sheot were adopted. The retiring directors, Mr. D.
