THEFT OF CASHBOX.

ARREST AT AUCKLAND. ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Following his arrest with another man on a charge of theft in Auckland, irederick Murray, a plasterer, aged 33, was charged with stealing a cashbox containing money, cheques, money orders, postal notes and Government bonds, of a total value of £669 16s. sd, the property of Levi and Jackson, solicitors, Wellington. Accused was remanded to appear at Wellington, and this morning in the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., he pleaded guilty to the charge,, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

Lavina Constance Mead said thai on April 29 she left the office of Levi and Jackson at about 3 p.m. to go to the bank. When she left the office there was a cashbox on the counter near the window, containing 11 cheques, two money orders, postal notes, cash, and four Government bonds, valued at £IOO each, making a total of £669 16s sd. When the witness returned to the office the cashbox was missing. „ Sydney Harry jMartin, a salesman, said that on April 29 two men came to the shop where he was employed, and said they wished to buy some slippers. In payment for the slippers they tendered a money order, signed "Williams." In exchange for the money order the accused received the slippers and £2 Os Id change. Alfred Lulham. licensee of the Royal Oak Hotel, said the accused called at the hotel to book accommodation for the night. He gave the name of Johnson. In payment for accommodation he tendered a cheque for £42 10s. Detective Kane said accused was arrested in Auckland in connection with another charge on July 7. Witness interviewed him about the cashing of tho cheques and money orders out of the cashbox. Ho admitted taking the cashbox, and in a statement made at the police station said ho threw tho empty box into the harbour.
