KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR.
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. A verdict of accidental death was returned bv the coroner. Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M., at an inquest yesterday into the death of James Charles Murray, of Avondale, who was knocked down by a motor-car on the Great North Road on June 17, and died in hospital two days later. The.coroner said he did not consider that any blame was attachable to the driver of the car. The poor visibility at the time and the fact that the deceased was an old man contributed to the accident. Alfred Johnson, driver of the car, said he was proceeding along the Great North Road, Avondale, in the direction of the city, when the accident occurred. He was on his correct side and was travelling at about 12 or 15 miles an hour. The road was dark and slippery owing to recent rain. On approaching the intersection of Rosebank Road witness faw a man crossing the road. He had his head down and apparently did not see the car, as he made no effort to avoid it. Wiluess swerved and put the brakes on, but the left-hand mudguard struck the deceased and knocked him down.
