LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
SECTIONS AT APANUI. ONLY TEN APPLICANTS. [?,Y TELECRAPIT. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI, Thursday. Applications for sections in the Apanui settlement, four miles from Opotiki, closed yesterday, with the remarkably small total of 10 applicants for the seven sections, •which range in area from 52 to 82 acres. Mr. 11. R. Hogg has farmed the land for many years, and it is comprised mostly of some of the best dairy land in the distr'ct. There had been a large number of applications for maps and information, and it is hard to understand the paucity of applications to go to ballot. It appears as if the regulations concerning finance liave proved too stringent, as it is neces sarv for applicants to bo able to produce evidence of holding £SOO cash or securities or guarantees for this amount. Guarantors must also supply evidence of their own financial position.
The fact has to bo taken into consideration that on most of tho sections a house and all necessary outbuildings, such iis cowshed and yards, will have to bo built, which will probably mean that loans will lutve to bo raised, with the usual delay experienced, so that in some instances successful applicants may have dilliculty in commencing dairying operations this coming season.
