HUGE MAST FELLED.

OLD WIRELESS STATION. OPERATIONS AT AWANUI. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT. ] KAITAIA, Thursday. Telegraph officers felled the mast of the old wireless station at Awanui this afternoon. The mast was held in position by three pairs of guys. One of these was let go and the huge structure, nearly 400 ft. in height, crashed to earth. The excellent workmanship of the mast was demonstrated by its splendid condition after the fall.

About a month ago departmental officers commenced preparations for felling the mast. A huge mass of concrete was placed about a portion of the base to prevent a throw-back, but this precaution was found to be unnecessary as the mast fell like a tree in the bush.
